Papers and weights

Paper weight is given in grams per square metre (g). Around 75–90 g is everyday paper; 115–150 g is a good flyer or brochure; 250–300 g is card.

Coated paper (esmaltado or couché) has a smooth surface that keeps colours bright. Uncoated bond is easy to write on.

Carbonless paper (papel químico) copies what you write on the first sheet to the sheets below. Each copy is a different colour so they are easy to tell apart.

Finishes

Lamination (plastificado) adds a thin matte or gloss film that protects the print. It needs coated paper of 150 g or more.

Spot UV (UV parcial) adds a raised gloss to chosen shapes, usually over matte lamination for contrast.

Die-cutting (troquel) cuts a piece to its own outline. Rounded corners, perforated tear-off lines and folding are done after printing and add time.

Inks: 4x0, 4x4, 1x0

The first number is the inks on the front, the second on the back. 4 means full colour (cyan, magenta, yellow and black); 1 means one ink, usually black; 0 means blank.

Screens show colour as light (RGB). Print mixes inks (CMYK), so some bright screen colours look duller on paper. Ask for a printed proof when colour matters.
